Think beautiful birth spaces are only for Pinterest moms?
not anymore!
Whether you're birthing at home, a hospital or a birth center, follow these simple steps to create a beautiful birth space that's all your own and helps oxytocin to flow.
Candles can really help set the mood. There's a reason we use them when we're relaxing in the bath or getting a massage. If your birth location doesn't allow you to burn real candles, you can buy realistic LED candles that will help set the mood. I like the pillar candles and tealights!

Printed, handmade, or purchased birth affirmations can make a beautiful addition to your space. If you handmake or color your affirmations in by hand, use the creation process to meditate and mentally absorb the affirmations so you can draw upon them later. Sidenote, I find that having affirmations in your birth space can actually act as cue cards for your partner or support team. It reminds them of the powerful words you'd like to hear when you're in labor land. Attach them to a string and pin them to the wall.
Number two
Surround yourself with photos of you with your partner, your other children, pets, or a landscape that's particularly meaningful to you. You can bring framed or loose photos to set up around your birth space, whether you're birthing at home, a birth center, or hospital.
Number three
Bring along your own personal essential oils and diffuser to your birth. The most common oily combination for labor is lavender mixed with clary sage - but feel free to diffuse essential oils that you love.
Number Four
Your birth team matters. You want to make sure that the people on your birth team, including your partner, doula, mother, friend, sister, etc, are on board with the type of birth you want. If your sister doesn't think homebirth is a good idea, don't invite her to be there. It's your right to protect your space and keep the energy in the room positive and uplifting. Seek out a doula who specializes in out of hospital births if that's what you're after.

Both my births were with midwives. One at a birth center, and one at home. When I say I understand what kind of birth you want, you should know that I really get it.
We live on a small homestead where we raise animals and grow our own food. I love babywearing, cloth diapering, tattoos, reading, gardening, and I'm pretty sure there's nothing a little breastmilk can't fix!
